Book Club for Newcomers

Helping newcomers connect with each other and practice speaking English

Book Club for Newcomers

The Multicultural Department’s Community Connections Program offers several programs to support newcomers to Canada as they progress along their settlement processes within their new community.

For higher-level English learners, the Community Connections’ Book Club has been a unique opportunity to practice English and connect with other newcomers of similar interests.  We offer two sessions per year and as a group, we work through a novel together, reading a small amount each week, then meeting weekly to discuss.

For people who are learning English, reading a novel is a very effective way to consolidate the language learning. As one reads, there is context to the new vocabulary and the brain is making constant connections! The Book Club is also an amazing way for newcomers to connect with each other and share meaningful discussions in a fun, low-pressure environment.

All services are free.

“It was interesting for me to share ideas with other members in the session. Their reflections were informative and helped me to get the idea of the story more deeply.”
