Youth Mentorship Volunteer Opportunity
The Youth Resource Centre encourages youth and community involvement. If you want to make a difference in a youth’s life consider volunteering as a mentor.
Abbotsford Youth Mentorship Project aims to match vulnerable youth (ages 12-19) with pro-social mentors in our community. Youth and their volunteer mentors meet weekly for about two hours.
- Many youth are without a consistent pro-social adult in their lives which makes them vulnerable for engaging in risky and negative behaviours.
- Evidence shows that vulnerable youth who are paired with a mentor are more likely to reach their full potential and be active participants in their school and community.
- Mentors also reduce financial, emotional and transportation barriers for youth to participate in fun, healthy and safe activities.
What do mentors and youth do together?
Mentors arrange with youth the best time for them to meet (ie- days, evenings, weekends) and decide what activities they want to do together. Some activity ideas are walks, coffee shop, mini-golf, crafts, shopping, community events, video games, music, etc. During these activities mentors can provide life advice and guidance, non-judgmental listening, teach new skills, and become a positive role model.
