Job Summary

This position is funded through Canada Summer Jobs, which has certain requirements and encourages the hiring of youth in the following categories to apply, disabilities, Indigenous, Black, racialized youth, and youth in the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

Youth must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be between the ages of 16 and 30, at the time of their start of employment at Archway.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, immigrant with permanent residency status, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
  • NOTE: International students are not eligible for this program.

The Canada Summer Jobs program objectives are to:

  • provide quality experiences for youth;
  • respond to national and local priorities to improve access to the labour market for youth who face unique barriers to employment, i.e., youth who are early leavers of high school; not in employment, education or training; are underemployed; Black, and other racialized youth; youth with disabilities; Indigenous youth; 2SLGBTQ+ youth;
  • provide opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills.

The CSJ Starfish Pack Program Assistant, Food Bank, will work with the Starfish Pack Coordinator to oversee the Program including creating and costing food menus for the school and summer Starfish Pack Program.  The Program Assistant will also support food distribution activities for Food Bank operations and Archway events.

Your Role:

Archway’s CSJ Starfish Pack Program Assistant with the Food Bank contributes by:

  • Communicating with schools, volunteers, and all Starfish parents/caregivers by phone, e-mail, and in person.
  • Contacting all Starfish Pack locations to provide support for the Program.
  • Drafting communication messages for newsletters and Archway’s website.
  • Assisting in registering and onboarding all clients, Starfish Pack locations, and participating schools for the summer Starfish Pack food hampers.
  • Working with the Food Bank drivers to ensure distribution of food packages and food hampers.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely food orders (quantity and quality) are placed on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
  • Assisting in planning and updating the menus for the Back-to-School Starfish Pack Backpack Program for the fall.

This position is a great fit for someone who is interested in helping create food hampers for school-based children, has a passion for helping those in need, and who understands the hardships for low-income families who struggle to put food on the table.  

Our Offer:

  • Wage: $19.00 per hour.
  • A full-time position at 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Some evening or weekend work may be required.
  • Temporary for 8 weeks, starting in June 2025.

      Getting an Interview–you will be considered if you have:

      • A diploma or degree in Human or Social Services or a related field is an asset.
      • A combination of education and work experience in a related field is an asset.
      • Experience in program coordination an asset.
      • Experience in working in a position that addresses food security an asset.

      The Job Requires you to have:

      • A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license and satisfactory driver’s record.
      • The use of a personal, reliable car for program-related driving.
      • First Aid Certification is an asset.
      • Good networking and relationship building skills; able to build rapport with clients, volunteers, and community partners.
      • Understanding of basic food needs, including dietary, cultural and nutritional requirements.
      • Ability to work well with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous populations.
      • Ability to have direct, in-person contact with on-site staff and clients; adherence to health and safety protocols is required.
      • The ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
      • The ability to sit for extended periods and screen/keyboard use.
      • Ability to interact with people in challenging situations and in various stages of trauma response.
      • The ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary collaborative team. 
      • The ability to work in person during regular working hours Monday to Friday, and flexibility to work some evenings or Saturdays as required.
      • Strong organizational and time management skills.
      • Competency with computers; able to use Microsoft Office 365, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
      • Ability to use virtual meeting platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
      • ​​​Eligibility to meet Canada Summer Jobs requirements of being between 16 to 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada. International students are not eligible participants, including anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are not eligible.
      • A satisfactory criminal records check is a condition of employment which Archway will make arrangements for the successful candidates.
