Job Summary
As a subcontracted freelance interpreter with ITS, you will deliver essential interpretation services in community, healthcare and legal settings including hospitals, physiotherapy clinics, job sites, schools, law firms etc. Your core responsibility is to facilitate clear, accurate and culturally sensitive communication between English speakers and individuals with limited English proficiency. You will play a vital part in removing language barriers and ensuring equitable access to essential services, helping clients fully understand and engage with the support available to them.

Interpreters with relevant training, qualifications and experience are highly welcomed, as interpreter training and professional experience are valuable assets that contribute to the quality of our services.
You must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
- Hold a degree or diploma in interpreting or a related field from a government-accredited institution, in or outside of Canada.
- Possess a degree in languages, linguistics, or a related field from a Canadian university.
- Have at least two years of verifiable, relevant interpreting experience.
- Have completed a minimum of 300 hours of interpreting in the relevant language.
- Are associate members of Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia (STIBC) and awaiting certification examination.
Your Role:
- Facilitate Accurate communication
Interpret spoken language precisely and faithfully between English and non-English speakers, ensuring that meaning, tone, and intent are preserved. - Respect Culture Differences
Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness, ensuring respectful and inclusive communication that honours the diverse backgrounds of all participants. - Maintain Confidentiality
Adhere to ITS confidentiality standards and code of conduct, especially when handling sensitive personal information. - Prepare for Assignments
Review relevant materials before assignments to ensure familiarity with terminology and subject matter. - Manage On-Site Logistics
Arrive on time at the correct location, using appropriate travel methods such as personal vehicle, public transit or other means. - Report Challenges and Incidents
Communicate any difficulties or concerns encountered during interpretation sessions to the appropriate professional or ITS dispatch team.
The Job Requires you to have:
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in English and at least one other language, with strong verbal and written communication skills in both.
- Interpretation Experience: Demonstrated experience providing consecutive interpretation in community, healthcare, or legal settings.
- Cultural Competency: Ability to interpret with cultural sensitivity and awareness, ensuring respectful and accurate communication across diverse backgrounds.
- Confidentiality & Ethics: Strong understanding of professional ethics and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
- Flexibility & Responsiveness: Reliable availability for assignments and prompt communication with ITS, including reporting any periods of unavailability.
