What is the Diversity Health Fair?
The 6th Annual Abbotsford Diversity Health Fair is the largest event of its kind in BC and has evolved into one of the most exciting and dynamic multicultural events in Abbotsford, B.C.
The Fair was created to provide immigrants, refugees and ethno-cultural communities with access to a wide range of health and wellness resources, presented in a number of languages including Cantonese, French, Korean, Vietnamese, Farsi, Punjabi, Spanish and Mandarin. The past fairs were a big success with over 7500 people collectively. Over 50 health organizations participated in the fairs, discussed resources and network with other health agencies.
The 2015 Diversity Health Fair will focus on the theme of “Holistic Health Care”. When visiting the Diversity Health Fair, you and your family will have access to a great deal of information in different languages about what is and how to adopt a healthy or balanced life, how to control your weight, and strategies to enjoy daily physical activities. All of these are considered to be the best steps to prevent health related ailments and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Diversity Health Fair’s Theme: Holistic Health Care
A system of comprehensive or total patient care that considers the physical, emotional, social, economic, and spiritual needs of the person.
The importance of the topic taking into consideration that 37 % of BC residents have one or more chronic diseases and 80% of the provincial health care budget is used to respond to their needs. Immigrant newcomers usually come to Canada in good health, which is known as the “healthy immigrant effect,” but it is also known that this health advantage is gradually lost over time. Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular conditions, cancer and Type 2 diabetes share common risk factors: unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle and smoking. Therefore most of the efforts to prevent chronic diseases at the community health level are focusing on promoting eating healthy foods, daily activity and avoiding addictions use. Balance your work, health, life with useful health and wellness information.
Goals of the fair:
- To promote healthy living and initiatives to Abbotsford’s diverse community.
- To support and empower people to make changes in the way they eat and live.
- To provide health organizations with an opportunity to demonstrate to immigrants and
culturally diverse population the programs they have in place that promote access to their
health services. - To enable health organizations and community service agencies to meet with one another and to establish linkages to inform & promote current and future health care initiatives and needs.
