At 55, Diana* never imagined she’d go from making well over six figures a year to accessing community supports on a regular basis.

Once the proud co-owner of a thriving construction company in Calgary, the actions of Diana’s business partner led to a devastating financial fallout, leaving her without a source of income, home, or vehicle to her name.

Hoping to rebuild, Diana, along with her two children and her 12-year-old granddaughter, Rose*, moved to Abbotsford. Soon after, Diana became Rose’s sole caregiver when Rose’s mother left their home, adding more financial stress.

Reluctant to seek out community assistance at first, Diana eventually accepted the need to turn to the Archway Food Bank for support.

“It was a humbling experience for someone who has spent the majority of their life being self-reliant,” said Diana.

Diana was taken aback by how friendly the Archway Food Bank staff were on her first visit. She recalls a warmth about the atmosphere and people that instantly put her at ease. For the first time in months, Diana felt seen as opposed to judged.

“Every donation, every volunteer hour, every act of kindness – it all makes a difference. We’re not just filling empty fridges and pantries, for many we are a bridge during the hardest times of their lives,” shared Rebecca Thuro, Manager of Food Security.

More Than Supplemental Food Assistance

Beyond food, the Archway Food Bank offered Diana a range of important services that became crucial to her well-being.

“When the food bank told me about the Dental Clinic, I almost didn’t believe it,” shared Diana.

When a troublesome tooth began to cause unbearable pain, Diana was astonished that the Dental Clinic made room in their schedule and removed the tooth right away.

Even amid the unexpected dental concerns, supporting her granddaughter and son remained Diana’s utmost priority. Diana found it difficult to find a stable job without a vehicle, so Rose was also enrolled in the Starfish Packs Program.

“The food we receive from the food bank doesn’t always cut it, so we also access the Starfish Pack,” said Diana.

“Food provisions from the food bank only cover 2-6 days’ worth of food, which isn’t always enough for some families, but that’s why we provide multiple options to fill in the gaps,” said Rebecca.

During the month of December, Diana discovered Archway’s Christmas Bureau, which gave her the opportunity to browse the Toy Room shelves. This additional support helped make the holidays just as special by providing gifts that she would not have otherwise been able to afford.

“Having gifts under the tree brought a sense of normality into our lives through all of the uncertainty,” Diana said.

Moving Forward

Accepting help was never easy for Diana, given her self-reliant nature. However, accessing community support has allowed her to find the strength to continue moving forward.

Although she is unsure of what the future holds, Diana is grateful for the support she has received from the Archway Food Bank.

“I want people to know how much their donations mean,” said Diana. “The need is real, and the food bank plays its part in making a difference.”

Recovering from significant financial losses and family changes takes time. Programs like the Archway Food Bank ensure that there is continuity in food availability and community.  This support throughout the year offers a lifeline and a sense of stability for individuals like Diana during challenging times.
