Kerry is a 65-year-old resident of Hearthstone Place, Archway’s supportive housing initiative in Abbotsford. He shares his story of transformation, stability, and sobriety, shedding light on the profound impact of this program.

Kerry’s life before Hearthstone was fraught with challenges and struggles where using alcohol was a significant part of his journey. His relationship with alcohol started early and he had his first drink at eight years old after his father encouraged him to try it.

Kerry enjoyed the feeling that alcohol gave him. When he was a teenager, his neighbour’s dad made his own dandelion wine, which he had easy access to, as his friend had the keys to the cellar where the wine was stored.

Drinking became a problem for him from then on.

Due to drinking, Kerry and his life partner separated after 30 years, and he lost contact with his family – he’s not even sure if his brother and sister are alive anymore.

“I lived in my car for about two years on and off. I was really a heavy drinker and even stayed in a rehabilitation center in New Westminster a long time ago,” said Kerry.

Upon moving to Hearthstone, Kerry experienced a shift that changed his trajectory.

Hearthstone Place is a low-barrier housing initiative which houses individuals who have experienced homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless. Due to its low-barrier status, and mandate to be welcoming and accessible, Hearthstone does not require residents to abstain from using substances or alcohol.

“When I got here, I was drinking quite a bit, but then I got to a point where I said to myself, ‘I’ve lost everything through it, so I’m not going to do it anymore.’ If it wasn’t for Hearthstone, I would probably be dead.”

With support staff on-site 24/7, Hearthstone focuses on helping residents address personal barriers, such as substance use and mental health issues, within a stable and supportive environment.

Hearthstone opened in 2017 in collaboration with BC Housing and the City of Abbotsford. The program supports 20 men and 10 women by providing them with individual, self-contained suites, and residents are allowed to live at Hearthstone for as long as needed.

“The difference between living on the street and having no place to go to living at Hearthstone is huge. Hearthstone gives you your freedom. You can go out when you want. It’s a big, clean environment, and I get along with the people who live here,” said Kerry.

Kerry’s transition to Hearthstone wasn’t without its challenges. He had to confront his past and accept his new circumstances. Despite the initial uncertainty, Kerry found solace and support at Hearthstone, which was instrumental in helping him cease drinking.

“We support people where they are at through a personalized approach. There is no one-size-fits-all method to helping our residents; they all have different needs, circumstances, and abilities,” said David Kariuki, supportive housing supervisor at Archway.

“I haven’t drunk in a long time. When I got here, I was drinking quite a bit, but then I got to a point where I said to myself, ‘I’ve lost everything through it, so I’m not going to do it anymore.’ If it wasn’t for Hearthstone, I would probably be dead.”

The staff at Hearthstone play a vital role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for residents. This sense of community and understanding was pivotal in Kerry’s journey towards stability.

Kerry’s story is a testament to the transformative power of programs like Hearthstone Place. By providing stable housing and comprehensive support, Hearthstone empowers its residents to overcome personal barriers and work towards independent and successful living.

Kerry’s journey from living in his car and struggling with alcoholism to finding stability and community at Hearthstone exemplifies the profound impact this initiative has on individuals and the community.
