When Kike arrived in Canada from Colombia in 2023, he could only speak a handful of English words.
“Yes,” “no,” and “thank you” were among the few phrases he understood.
Originally from Venezuela, Kike had built an impressive career and educational background. He held two master’s degrees, one in Veterinary Medicine and another in Public Accounting.
But despite his accomplishments, he and his partner made the difficult decision to move overseas due to ongoing political tensions and the hopes of building a better future together.

Discovering Access2English
Shortly after arriving in Canada, Kike’s partner began searching for programs that could help them settle into their new lives. During that search, they discovered the Archway Access2English (A2E) program.
In November 2023, Kike walked into his first English class.
“I still remember my first teacher,” he said. “Her name was Melissa, and she was wonderful. She had such a positive spirit and was so welcoming.”
Adjusting to a new language came with its challenges, especially as the only Spanish-speaking student in his class.
Despite these obstacles, Kike was determined to improve. He practiced English whenever he could, both inside and outside the classroom.
To gain work experience, he took a job as a dishwasher with a catering company. Communication was often difficult, but Kike saw every interaction as an opportunity to learn and build his confidence.
His hard work paid off. Starting at Level 1 in the A2E program, Kike progressed quickly through the curriculum. After each assessment, he advanced to the next level until eventually reaching Level 6 – a significant milestone that reflects an intermediate level of English proficiency, with the ability to communicate confidently in most every day, workplace, and community situations.
As his English skills grew, so did his career opportunities.
What began as a dishwasher position evolved into a series of promotions. Over time, Kike worked his way up to cook, prep cook, line cook, and eventually sous chef.
“I learned how to cook from my grandmother and mother when I first moved away for university back home,” he shared. “What started as a necessity has become a passion, and I’m grateful that this skill has created so many opportunities for me.”
Giving Back Through Volunteering
When Kike reached Level 4, he learned about an opportunity to volunteer with students in the lower-level classes.
Many of the learners were newcomers from Latin America who were facing the same struggles he had experienced only months earlier.
“I was motivated by the opportunity to support newcomers who were starting the program,” he shared.
He began volunteering while continuing his own classes, and the experience quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of his journey.
“It was a very good learning experience for me,” he said.
Through volunteering, Kike not only strengthened his own English skills but also learned about cultures and countries from around the world. More importantly, he gained a deeper understanding of how important support can be when someone is learning a new language and building a new life.

“He connected naturally with learners because he understood the challenges they were facing. His encouragement, kindness, and commitment to helping others created a welcoming environment and left a lasting impact on the students he supported.”
One of Kike’s most memorable moments was seeing students gain confidence in their writing after receiving encouragement and support from him. Watching their progress reminded him of how far he had come himself.

Sharing Positivity with Others
Kike believes that a positive attitude can make all the difference when starting over in a new country.
“When you start a new life, you need good energy,” he said. “Usually, I always feel happy and have a positive vibe. You only have one life, so smile.”
That positivity has become one of the ways he connects with students and newcomers who may be feeling overwhelmed or uncertain.
His advice to anyone beginning their English-learning journey is simple.
“Don’t be nervous. Everyone is there to help. Don’t worry, no one is judging you.”

Looking Ahead
While Kike is proud of everything he has accomplished since arriving in Canada, he remains focused on the future and the goals that first inspired his journey.
His long-term goal is to return to the veterinary field.
Recently, he interviewed for a veterinary technician position and is hopeful about the opportunities ahead.
“Every step of my journey has helped me grow personally and professionally,” he shared.
“I’m excited about what comes next and hopeful that I can return to the veterinary field while continuing to build a life for myself in Canada.”
