Summary of Work:
The Urban Farm Work Experience opportunity will enable the participant to work as part of a team to ensure the Urban Farm has an adequate volume and variety of crops available for weekly sales. A wide variety of crops are grown in field conditions and in unheated greenhouse settings. The work varies from week to week and will be physically demanding. A combination of walking, bending, standing for long periods of time, lifting, and repetitive activities will be required. Please note that the nature of the work requires you to be outside in all types of weather.
NOTE: United Way BC Work Experience Grant is funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
Your Role:
Archway’s Urban Farm Crop Farm Labourer with the Urban Farm contributes by:
- Working with the vegetable and fruit crops by preparing beds, seeding, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, harvesting, etc.
- Managing the watering schedule.
- Preparing and packaging the crops to sell at the Farmers’ Market.
- Mowing grass, maintaining and expanding the growing space and buildings of the Urban Farm site.
- Assisting with family-friendly events and camps throughout the summer.
This work experience opportunity is a great fit for someone who likes physical outdoor work with crops, farming, and gardening, and enjoys educating residents and school children about growing market crops, and connecting people to nature and fresh food.

- You meet the WEOG eligibility criteria for this work experience opportunity.
- You have experience in farming is an asset.
- You have experience with gardening, garden equipment or garden machinery is an asset.
- You have the ability to get to and from work.
The Work Experience Opportunity Requires you to be able to:
- Use mowers, trimming and pruning equipment.
- Work physical labour related to garden maintenance and crop production, which will include periods of constant motion including walking, repetitive tasks, lifting, bending, and long periods of standing.
- Lift between 20 to 50 lbs.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including inclement weather.
- Adhere to health and safety protocols.
- Learn, have knowledge, and apply food safety and safe working procedures.
- Work flexible hours.
- Undergo a criminal records check and maintain a satisfactory criminal record.

Eligibility and Criteria:
The focus of this initiative is to support individuals who are recipients or eligible to receive income or disability assistance and who may have barriers to labour market participation.
Eligible Work Experience participants include:
BCEA clients including:
- Income Assistance (IA)
- Disability Assistance (DA)
- Hardship Assistance (HA) recipients
- Income Assistance through the Person with Persistent Multiple Barriers to Employment (PPMB) benefit
- Those qualified to receive assistance from a Treaty First Nation that is funded through the Federal Department of Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada OR those qualified to receive assistance from a First Nation Administering Authority that administers an Income Assistance Program on behalf of Indigenous Services Canada.
- Indigenous people receiving equivalent federal assistance can participate in work experience projects that occur only on Indigenous reserves or Treaty Lands.
- Individuals who have previously completed a work experience placement through the Work Experience Opportunities Grant may participate again in limited circumstances.
- Each participant must be legally able to work in British Columbia.
Ineligible participants:
- Current WorkBC Wage Subsidy recipients.
- Current employees in their existing positions.
