As the school year comes to a close on June 25, hundreds of children in Abbotsford will lose access to school meals, and their weekly Starfish packs, that they rely on throughout the year.
To help close this gap, Archway Community Services is asking for donations to support the Summer Starfish Pack Program, ensuring local children continue to receive nutritious, reliable food throughout the summer months.
“For many families, school meal programs are a lifeline,” said Rebecca Thuro, manager of Food Security at Archway. “When those programs pause for the summer, it can leave a significant gap. The Summer Starfish program helps ensure children don’t have to go hungry during that time.”
Each Summer Starfish pack is filled with kid-friendly, nutritious foods such as cereal, canned proteins, grains, soups, bread, snacks, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Distributed bi-weekly throughout the summer; these packs provide consistent support until students return to school in the fall.
The need is growing with 500 children expected to register, and community support is critical. For just $25, donors can provide one child with food for a week. A contribution of $200 ensures a child is fed for the entire summer.
“The support we receive from the community makes all the difference in creating stability for families and helping children thrive,” said Thuro.
Since its launch in 2018, the Summer Starfish packs has become a vital resource for families across Abbotsford. During the school year, the program supports more than 750 children weekly, and the summer extension maintains that support year-round.
Without programs like Summer Starfish, many families would face difficult choices between basic needs and groceries.
“Every donation helps more children in Abbotsford have consistent access to the food they need this summer,” said Thuro.
Residents and businesses are invited to take part in supporting local children and families by visiting the Abbotsford Food Bank website.
With the first summer distribution beginning on July 8, Archway hopes to obtain enough donations to make sure they can help all the children who apply.
Archway Community Services delivers more than 90 programs supporting individuals and families across Abbotsford, including food security, mental health services, newcomer support, and programs for children and seniors.
