When Al first walked through the doors of Abby Dads, he was in one of the hardest chapters of his life. What began as a search for support during a challenging time turned into a powerful journey of healing through community.

Before coming to Abby Dads, Al was navigating a difficult family transition. Al felt lost in a system he didn’t fully understand – one filled with legal complexities and emotional exhaustion.

“I didn’t know what to expect from Abby Dads,” Al recalled. “But to find a space where men could come together to talk about their emotions, without judgement, was very unique.”

Abby Dads supports fathers in building healthier relationships with their families through relationship-based training programs and drop-in group sessions. Al began attending Dad Chat, a weekly father’s drop-in where men gather to talk openly about life, parenting, relationships, and challenges they face.

“Dad Chat was huge for me,” said Al. “It was a space where men shared their stories. You realize you’re not alone. You get ideas, support, and hear from guys who found ways to reconnect with their kids or resolve conflict,” said Al.

One of the most impactful parts of Al’s experience was the bond he built with other dads, which became a foundation for healing. Al and a few others began meeting outside of the formal programs to exercise together. They used physical activity not just to stay fit, but to strengthen their minds and build resilience.

“I met guys who shared the same stories as me, the same values and drive. Together, we formed what I call a community of brotherhood, a safe space for people to come together and work through their issues.”

Through these friendships, Al experienced for himself the connection between fitness and mental health. He saw how movement and community helped transform not just his mindset, but the lives of others around him.

“Al arrived at Abby Dads with a heavy heart and real concerns about his relationship with his child. He maintained consistent contact with community, even when the days had been really rough for him,” said Reg Unrau, Abby Dads program supervisor.

Today, Al enjoys a more stable family life and has regular time with his child. He is not only a more confident father – he’s also a reminder that healing is possible when men are given the space to be vulnerable and supported.
