Donna has been a part of Archway’s Discovery program since 1997, and during this time, her connection with the community and her sense of independence have only deepened. Since our last feature on Donna in 2019, her life with the program has evolved in meaningful ways.
One of the most significant changes in Donna’s life is her new role as a helper within the Discovery program. Previously a participant who enjoyed activities and outings, Donna now finds joy in assisting others in the program. She helps fellow participants with tasks like managing their activities and even takes the lead in the reading circle, where she reads to others and encourages them to engage in the stories.
“Donna is a natural helper and often assists her peers in our program. We appreciate her efforts, including her assistance to lead our reading circles.”
“I enjoy giving back because it makes me feel good knowing I’m doing that,” said Donna.

The Discovery program at Archway assists adults aged 19 and older with diverse abilities, helping them build self-esteem, social skills, and independence, all designed to match their individual interests and goals.
Donna’s involvement with Discovery also keeps her busy with various activities she loves. Bingo, outings for lunch, and group games are still highlights of her week.
“I enjoy giving back because it makes me feel good knowing I’m doing that.”
Living on her own in Abbotsford, Donna cherishes the freedom her lifestyle affords her. While she doesn’t see her family in Vancouver as often as she’d like due to their work schedules, she makes the most of their time together when they visit. Donna’s independence is a source of pride for her; she enjoys the autonomy it brings and the ability to manage her own life.
The staff at Discovery continue to be a vital support system for Donna, helping her navigate challenges and encouraging her to stay active and engaged. For Donna, the Discovery program remains a cornerstone of her life, offering not just activities and socialization, but also the opportunity to grow, help others, and maintain a busy, fulfilling lifestyle.
“It’s always good to keep yourself busy.”
