After leaving Ukraine in 2023 to escape the Russia-Ukraine war, Olena and her family arrived in Canada – a new country where everything felt unfamiliar. With no established connections and uncertainty about what came next, they began the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.

Determined to support her family, Olena quickly began searching for work. Her background as a bookkeeper and accountant helped her secure a short-term, part‑time data entry job, but when the contract ended, she found herself back at square one.

Wanting to approach things differently this time, she decided to explore volunteering as a way to stay engaged and open new doors while she continued her job search.

Discovering the World of Volunteering

Olena explained that volunteering was not common where she came from.

“This is not something many people do back home. I had never heard much about volunteering before, but I was interested in trying.”

Already familiar with Archway, where she accessed the food bank and took English language classes, Olena applied online for several volunteer postings.

Soon after, Mila Aberten, manager of Immigrant Employment Services, reached out to her and offered her the Employment Specialist Assistant volunteer position with the Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants program.

“When I reached out to Olena, I could already see her potential. She is consistently helpful, reliable, and brings an excellent work ethic to everything she does,” shared Mila.

Volunteering as an Employment Specialist Assistant

In her volunteer role, Olena conducts online job searches on various online job search engines and gathers leads for internationally trained professionals seeking employment.

As a newcomer herself, she connects deeply with the clients. She understands firsthand the challenges they face.

“I always do my best to find at least one suitable position for each client, because I understand how challenging the job search can be.”

Over time, Olena has noticed positive changes within herself as well. The role has helped her strengthen her English, improve her typing, and expand her vocabulary; all skills she knows will support her as she seeks full-time employment.

Olena’s son is currently in Grade 10, and she shared how volunteering has also broadened her understanding of the Canadian labour market and the skills needed for different careers.

“This experience helps me understand what jobs are needed here. It even helps me guide my son as he prepares for his future.”

A Welcoming Community

One of Olena’s favourite parts of volunteering is the sense of community she’s found at Archway.

“During lunch, I like that everyone gets together in the break room to share how their day is going. Sometimes they even bring cultural food to share.”

Reflecting on her journey with the program, Olena expressed deep appreciation for the staff who support volunteers every step of the way.

“I have learned so much. Ms. Mila and her team are incredibly helpful and always ready to answer questions. Their support makes this experience meaningful and motivating.”

It’s because of her own positive experience that she now wants to inspire others to give volunteering a try.

“Archway helped us when we first came, and I am glad I can give back in my small way. I think volunteering can make people happier. You’re doing something good for someone else, not for money, but for yourself and your community.”

Looking Ahead With Hope

With Archway’s support, Olena has applied for a work permit. As she navigates this new chapter, she remains open‑minded and optimistic about where her career may lead.

“Maybe I’ll find something new and interesting for myself too. New country, new opportunities, who knows, maybe someday I’ll change my occupation to HR or employment specialist!”

No matter what path she chooses, Olena is determined to build a future filled with possibility and purpose.
