Jill has been part of Archway’s Discovery program since 2006, and she lit up when talking about her experiences with the program.
“Oh boy, we do arts and crafts and ride on transit,” she said with a smile, recalling the many activities she’s participated in.
With Discovery, Jill enjoys taking transit to High Street for coffee, going for nature walks, and bowling.
The Discovery program at Archway assists adults aged 19 and older with diverse abilities, helping them build self-esteem, social skills, and independence. Participants like Jill engage in a wide range of community activities, from volunteering to social events, designed to match their individual interests and goals.
“Our clients are the center of our programming decisions, and we ensure that each person has the opportunity to lead a fulfilling, interactive, and productive life.” said Heather O’Brien, Archway’s manager of Community Living.
“I like being with people and doing stuff. It’s fun.”
“Our clients are the center of our programming decisions, and we ensure that each person has the opportunity to lead a fulfilling, interactive, and productive life,” said Heather O’Brien, Archway’s manager of Community Living.
The program staff play a crucial role in supporting participants to be as independent as possible.
“I do stuff myself without asking staff for help,” Jill proudly shared.
Through the program, Jill obtained work experience at O’Neil’s restaurant in Abbotsford, where she volunteered for about 10 years. Her role involved taking customers’ orders, delivering them to the kitchen, and serving meals.
Jill’s volunteering didn’t stop there. She also spent time at a care home called Evergreen, where she would sit with seniors, help set up lunch and read to residents. Currently, she volunteers at Cedarbrooke, an independent-living retirement facility in Mission, where her parents live. There, she decorates for events like Canada Day and socializes with the residents.
Jill also serves as the president of Self-Advocate Net – a dedicated community of self-advocates with diverse abilities, aimed at empowering individuals to learn about their rights and opportunities for inclusion. As president, Jill leads their monthly meetings where they plan fundraisers and leadership retreats for their members.

When asked what she enjoys most about the Discovery Program, Jill’s answer is simple.
