Years before she became a Meals on Wheels client, Harriet was one of the volunteers delivering meals to seniors in her community.

At the time, she never imagined that one day she would benefit from the same service she worked so hard to support.

When asked about her role as a volunteer, Harriet reflected on how the program operated in those days.

“We would get the food from a grocery store, bring it to the church, portion it out, and deliver it to people,” Harriet recalled.

Today, meals are delivered up to four times a week, Monday through Thursday, and clients can choose how many meals they would like from a rotating menu.

Options include full meals, soups, and desserts, available fresh or frozen to suit individual preferences and needs.

For Harriet, volunteering was simply a way to give back. She enjoyed being part of something that made a difference in people’s lives. What she didn’t realize then was how meaningful that experience would become later in her own life.

“Years ago, I was doing it for other people, and now I’m receiving it myself,” she said.

Looking back, Harriet believes her time as a volunteer gave her a unique appreciation for the program.

“My volunteer experience is part of the reason I use it now,” she said.

Today, Harriet lives independently on the same property as her son and daughter-in-law. To make sure she gets enough nutrition, Harriet orders Meals on Wheels a few times each week. She still enjoys cooking for herself on the other days, but having nutritious meals readily available provides added convenience and peace of mind for both Harriet and her family.

Although she is not entirely dependent on the service, Harriet knows that many others are.

“There are people out there who really rely on these meals. For some people, it’s a lifeline.”

Having experienced the program from both sides, Harriet is quick to encourage others to get involved.

“I think it’s a great program,” she said. “And volunteering is a great way for anyone to give back to the community.”

“Harriet’s story is such a powerful reminder of what makes Meals on Wheels special,” said Nilay Joshi, Senior Services Supervisor.

“She understands the program from both perspectives, as someone who once gave her time to support others and now as someone who benefits from that same support.”

When asked what she would like to say to the volunteers and donors who make the program possible, Harriet keeps her message simple.

“Just thank you.”

For Harriet, Meals on Wheels has come full circle. What began as an opportunity to serve others has become a source of support in her own life, a testament to the lasting impact of community and the power of giving back.
