Bella’s journey with Archway began when she joined the Socialization, Teaching, and Recreation (STAR) Club as a youth. The STAR program assists children and youth, aged 8-18 years, with diverse disabilities, helping them increase their self-esteem by providing opportunities to meet new friends and participate in recreational activities while learning new skills. As Bella transitioned into adulthood, she continued to receive support from Archway’s Discovery program.

Bella has been an enthusiastic participant in Archway’s Discovery program since 2019. At the program, she engages in a wide range of activities that not only entertain but also help her develop essential life skills and foster connections with her peers.

“Bella adds so much joy and positivity to our group. She is a wonderful role model for her peers and is a delight to have in our program.”

Bella particularly enjoys the social aspects of Discovery. Whether it’s playing games, going bowling every Tuesday during the winter months, or participating in fun seasonal events like Christmas parties, Bella is always eager to join in.

“The Christmas party was so much fun. Last year we did karaoke and a Secret Santa.”

“Bella adds so much joy and positivity to our group. She is a wonderful role model for her peers and is a delight to have in our program,” said Heather O’Brien, manager of Community Living at Archway.

The Discovery program is designed for adults aged 19 and older who are diagnosed with diverse abilities. It offers a supportive environment where participants like Bella can enhance their self-esteem, socialization skills, and independence. The program is centered around the interests and goals of its participants, providing them with opportunities to engage in a variety of community activities.

“Thanks to [Archway], I have my first job.”

For Bella, Discovery has been more than just a place to have fun; it has also been instrumental in helping her achieve personal goals. One of her significant accomplishments through the Employing People in the Community (EPIC) program was landing her first job at McDonald’s, where she has been working as a lobby attendant for over a year.

“Thanks to you guys, I have my first job,” shared Bella.

In addition to her job, Bella is keen on learning new life skills. Recently, she set a goal to create a painting for each member of her large family, which is no small task with 15 relatives to consider. While she’s made progress, Bella is already thinking ahead to her next goal: becoming more responsible and continuing to learn practical life skills, such as budgeting and doing laundry.

When she’s not at Discovery or at work, she enjoys attending church and spending time with her family. Every summer, she looks forward to camping with them at Bridal Falls Waterpark for some much-needed time in the water.

As Bella reflects on her time at Archway, it’s clear that the Community Living programs have made a significant impact on her life. It’s not just about the activities or the milestones she’s achieved; it’s also about the supportive community that she’s been able to be a part of from her time as a youth to now as an adult. Discovery continues to be a positive environment for Bella where she can grow, learn, and thrive.
